If I had to chose only one it would be a tough call between Lubitsch, Wilder, Cukor and Chaplin.
I think more and more that comedies are the hardest genre to write and direct (especially when I look at the many crappy comedy movies of today - Pixar's movies and the 1st Shrek are the only remarkable comedies of recent years imo).

Hmm...my vote goes to one of the greatest of movie history: Charlie Chaplin.

Chaplin was an actor, writer, producer, director and composer. Or simply: a genius.
