I can't believe there is so much arguing over this. No it's not the full Final Fantasy VII story. No its not just Midger stretched out. It's a retelling of a section of the Final Fantasy VII story. A damned good one at that, introducing new characters, stories and areas that wouldn't be possible if square did the full remake in one hit. Well of course it would be possible but we would be waiting so long to get it. The initial side quests aren't anything special. But they do get better, one in particular at the start that seemed like just a regular "kill this monster" quest ended up with the monster running away and me having to chase him into a new area that wasn't accessible before. Even in the first slums lots of the areas are only accessible via quests, you can choose to ignore them and continue with the story or do them and open up new areas.
My personal take is, it doesn't feel like Final Fantasy VII but does at the same time if that makes sense. Not to take anything away from it, I've been playing for 3 days straight now and can't put it down. But it definitely feels different from the original. And that's both good and bad. It's hard to explain though haha.
