It's something that was nr1 on the list of things developers wanted to see in a next gen console and the ps5 has twice the performance in that regard. It could be a complete game changer for overall level design and how we move around in them, and we'll obviously see a lot more open world type games. It sure will be interesting to see what'll happen if 3rd party developers fully embrace it and use the ps5 as the base console. |
It's going to play a large front-and-center role that is for sure.
Is it a game changer? Yes. Yes it is. But it's not a replacement for Ram, it helps with a RAM confined environment.
I am genuinely excited... And so should everyone regardless of platform you use.
goopy20 said: Also, I wonder how that will translate to the pc versions of those games. I know you always say pc has more ram, but for arguments sake, lets say the average gaming pc can't run games that are optimized for Sony's SSD tech (I mean there has to be a reason why you can't even buy a compatible SSD at this time). It would basically destroy MS's strategy of reaching the average pc gamer with GP.
We see this argument every console generation that because consoles have a sizable performance advantage over low-end and mid-range PC's, that somehow the PC versions of console games will somehow end up being compromised... Which has never happened.
Game engines are simply scalable.

You will get a good experience on either platform.
DonFerrari said: The video was recorded much earlier than MS release of information. So it was they explaining their route (sure they could already be expecting to have less CUs so where trying to say why it was better)
There are Pro's and Con's to each individual approach.
LudicrousSpeed said: Ah yes yes the SSD, the Sony fans version of secret sauce for this gen 😆
Replace 8GB GDDR5, Cell etc' with SSD. Same shit, different generation.
DonFerrari said: Nope, specialists in VGC will tell you it is meaningless since PC use SSD for over a decade and also that current tools are so good that having to develope to very weak HW won't impact gaming development at all. It is just marketing fluff, don't mark my words.
You are taking a dig without mentioning names. You seem overtly salty.
I suggest you move on and stop bringing this up every opportunity you can, it's not constructive rhetoric.
Captain_Yuri said: To add to that. One of the things we might want to look at is how much VRAM current gen games use on PC, specially at 4k since that's what the next gen consoles will be targeting. Some are not bad but others are... Holy Jebus! Here's a few examples: <SNIP>
And they are current gen titles... Food for thought. The SSD will be doing allot of heavy lifting next-gen.
