I remember reading a yahoo news article that basically summarized some psychology studies, which said that we play games for the same reason that we play sports, and for the same reason that we one-up our buddies; Its all about competition and more importantly, winning.
That's why there aren't that many girl gamers. Yeah, i know that the cool ones are, but that's besides the point.
