I think its actually fine to charge if Sony and MS are covering the expenses for games to offer online services and making the effort to keep cheaters out. MS inparticular keeps servers active for a long time which is great.

If anything they arguably charge too much and use "free games" to compensate.

PC have free online until today. Sony and MS doesn't really offer servers for the MP. It is just a nick and dime against customers. Similar to how MS were locking Netflix behind Gold.
