They didn't lock content out of the game unless you bought them.  Yeah, video game promotions with food are about as old the medium itself. Find a bunch of it on Atari. TMNT arcade NES came with a Pizza Hut coupon.  MTN Dew Promoted Halo 3. This is about MTX tho.

Those two promotions happened before games had DLC and MTX.  My guess is that Pac Man cereal was the first food and video game cross promotion.

DLC existed then. Atari 2600 went online with GameLine. Famicom was online. SNES had DLC and streaming games with satellaview. Also online multiplayer with X-band. Games supported it like Street Fighter II. Same with Genesis. X-band then streaming games with SEGA Channel. N64 Had DLC for Mario Studio N64DD. Saturn was able to go online with SEGA Netlink. Dreamcast had DLC for games like PSO and Skies of Arcadia.  PS1 had PlayOnline tied in with Final Fantasy IX to play Tetra master online. DLC became more common in modern gaming but DLC and streaming isn't new. It's older than half the people on twitter and maybe this forum. I believe you are correct on Pac-Man. They called it Pac-Fever and was the first to get a kids cartoon.
