Humor is a good way to deal with things out of your control and especially for dealing with useless fear. Of course humor is very subjective and can easily be misinterpreted.
A mockery would be saying things like the flu is much worse, it's all media hype, just wash your hands and you'll be fine.
Exaggeration is almost as bad, nowhere close to an extinction level event but there is the possibility that it will claim more lives than WW2 did.
Watch some of those movies and laugh at how horribly wrong they got things when you compare them with RL. Of course those movies also feed conspiracy theorists, must be some lab spill / engineered virus.
12 Monkeys is great btw, one of the best movies ever. Children of men comes right behind it. But no, nothing remotely close to that is about to happen.
