You got the wrong idea.. You all do. This was just to show that FF7 has more to offer than just story. Yes, some of these things played a major part in the main stoyline also, the snowboarding for example, fort condor was a side quest, the submarine, and the bike chase were mandatory to progress. The snowboarding was a lot of fun though.
