So do you think its not an insult? I've alway found that the word implies that the one saying it is better than the subject. If you said you enjoyed something popular and you were dismissed as a 'normie', would you not think that is an insult?

No, it's not an insult. It's an "Okay, whatever", because there would probably be some other area where I would be more interested in the niche thing instead of the 'normie' thing.
