Had the EU offered a serious challenge to compete economically or militarily with the US or China we were and would have remained a full partner.

Well on the military side of things, we Europeans are not as obsessed by "world domination" as the US is, we don't feel the need to invade, bomb, overthrow governments (as the US had done in central and south American countries in the past 50 years and elsewhere) Perhaps in light of growing threats from countries such as China, Russia, Iran or North Korea, perhaps we should be more militarized, I don't know.

As for the economic side of things, The Euro is pretty much on par with the US Dollar in terms of importance. The US dollar's only advantage is it being the world's reserve currency, but that's all. But here is the fun part: Had the Pound joined forces with the Euro by merging with it, we (the UK and EU) together would easily have weighed more than the Dollar. I wouldn't have given the dollar more than 10 years of domination before a united "Euro/Pound" would have kicked it out of the top spot. And that's not even including more countries (Like Poland, Scandinavian countries, other central European countries etc) that still can join the Euro and make it weigh even more.

The true winner of Brexit is the US Dollar and American domination. If anyone should party tonight it's Trump that should, also Putin and the Chinese dictator, can't remember his name. A weakened Europe is good for them all.

It's not or never has been about world domination.

It's about keeping the straits of hormuz or the suez canal open.

Neither the Euro or dollar have the power of the petro-dollar.

When the US leaves the middle east, Europe will have to deal with a resurgent Turkey and Russia. It'd be great if we could just sit back but that isn't how the real world works. The US leaving doesn't mean peace. It means Turkey and Russia stepping in instead and they're a lot less concerned about collateral damage compared to countries with a free press.

Putin? Italy or Canada can handle Russia if they matched them in defence spending. The UK could cripple their navy in an afternoon. China should be the world's concern just because of how long term they're willing to plan/wait.
