If I bought and gave a friend an apple, it obviously wouldn't be theft. If I chose to share that apple with my friend it wouldn't be theft either. None of this addresses using an emulator with a legal copy of a game. 

What is being pirated if I buy a legal copy of a game and engineer my own emulator?  

Owning the console the game is released for is part of the full asking price. I explained this in another post above.
