Two reasons:

1. Divert attention away from Trump's impeachment proceedings.

2. To earn brownie points for Trump's re-election by showing US citizens that Trump isn't a dog that only barks, but never bites.

In the end it's a gamble on Trump's part that the tacticians of other countries are smarter than him and won't answer with a kneejerk reaction that can lead to a large scale war. Russia and China might be allied with Iran, but will either of those countries drag its people into a large scale war because one Iranian general got killed? Not likely. Very much a long shot.

Iran itself isn't going to do something crazy either, so ultimately Trump will probably get away with it which is par for the course in his life.

No, they won't.  But that's why they'll join the fight.  This is chess.  We can't think just one play at a time here.  Iran will retaliate.  Maybe with military, but maybe with a major cyber attack.  And then we'll retaliate with military.  It will escalate.  It is that escalation that will draw the other 2 in.  For China, it might not even be military intervention but economic.  Gut punch America's economy in the middle of a war?

The US has been pivoting away from Europe and the Middle East since before Obama. The US doesn't need their oil anymore. The chess game in the ME is between Iran, Saudi Arabia and the Otto- er Turkey. Turkey could single-handedly defeat Iran, kick Russia out of the region and annex whatever they like and they probably will as the US leaves to focus on the Asia-Pacific region.
