Pulling from samples I wrote for another site:

Rocket League - ridiculously fun multiplayer/online, thrilling gameplay, easy to play and tough to master. Love the competitive aspect to it. Basically, there's a reason it's one of the biggest eSports games out there.

Overwatch - love the hero-based shooter concept, and how each hero is distinct. Again, it's accessible but subtly very nuanced. Feverishly addictive multiplayer. It's probably officially taken the mantle from Gears as far as hours logged into a video game thanks to it's online mode. Must have put 600-700 hours into it.

Minecraft - Played a TON of the game in its alpha stage, and was even a blast then. Love how simple it is on the exterior but also how rich and vast in scope it is. Litterally endless replay value. Love how you're basically in complete control, a quality I highly value in games.

Skyrim - the standard of WRPGS (Witcher 3 may take that title but I've barely played it). Even now it holds up. Very rewarding gameplay all around. Again, love the open-world aspect in which you can largey carve your own path and write your own story. A trait lacking with many modern games.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild - simply put, my favorite Zelda game since the original. Captures the open-ended, exploration aspects of that classic Zelda while spruced up with modern sensibilities. Love how subtly complex the physics/game engine is and the combat is super satisfying. Pretty art style that suits a fantasy series like Zelda well.

Borderlands 2 - Never played a game so fun in terms of solo AND co-op. Doesn't really sacrifice on either front. The environments are awesome, the weapons are insane, the characters are memorable (Handsome Jack and Tiny Tina are two of my favorite characters in gaming), great sense of humor, and again, love the art style. Just feels great to play. Open-ended and in-depth.

Honorable mentions: Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Odyssey, Gears 3, Terraria
