MK has always been a one title per platform title it's also part of the reason sells so well anything they want to add they just do DLC the's no real reason for them to deviate from this MK8 will be the top selling title in the franchise by the end of next year and by the end of the NS life time the switch version alone may have outsold MKWii. Releasing multiple installments not only hurts the strategy MK employs but also adds new costs and use of resources on what would not necessarily bring in more sales for example a single MK game may sell 30m as a system seller without being cut off while with multiple installments it may sell 15m or so as the legs in sales get disturbed as the two games essentially overlap in doing the same thing and compete with each other sure both games may sell 15m and you get 30m or more sales overall for the series anyway but then you had to use added resources to make the second game so effectively you possibly end up making less money going this route with a series that did fine with out it.

Games like Mario platformers and Zelda are a different case as unlike MK which is designed for as well as in a genre that allows for continuous replay value the former game series even with their open designs (especially BOTW) are at some point going to need a refresh due to factors like the game world and story becoming too familiar to the player after a while and so on which in their case a new installment compliments them rather than competes with them.
