I can't agree to that. Look at some of the scores for BotW. A few people scored it significantly lower than everybody else. The questions is why bother getting upset? If somebody thought Death was a boring tedious slog feast... they are suppose to give it 9/10 because Kojima? Because Sony? The idea that Sony games are reviewed more harshly is silly. GoW, Uncharted 1-4, TLoU, Horizon, Spiderman, MHW and many more scored amazingly well. Sony fans, in this case, are being silly. There simply isn't a media wide conspiracy against Sony. Edit As an example I would review RDR2 a 5/10, I hated it. Same with Sekiro. The idea that I HAVE to be trolling because I didn't like a critically acclaimed game is foolish. I sincerely and genuinely didn't like the game. As a point of clarity, I hated Xenoblade on the Wii U as well. I also don't like Animal Crossing. On the flip side, I would give Last Guardian a 10/10, loved it. |
That is because you are giving a score for how much you liked the game, not how good the game is.
I don`t like Halo and would score it 3 on my like, but I know the game is 8 or 9 so I would avoid reviewing.

That’s not how reviewing games work. Hell thats not bow reviewing anything works. Some of you have some insane notions for how reviews should work. Just because someone intended for something to play out or work in some way doesn’t mean you can’t criticize it for not doing it differently. We saw this recently with Crackdown 3, it was torn to shreds for not having a more modern SP offering and basically being a throwback to the original style. By your logic it should have been praised for succeeding in the vision of the developers. Same with Days Gone. Sony Bend gave us the game they wanted. But devs just didn’t think that game was great. Also, there’s zero reason why a reviewer shouldn’t deduct points from a game because it doesn’t meet their bias or expectations. That’s why, in your example of cartoony games, if you’re a fan of those, you ignore those reviewers who do what you described and only read those who are fans of the style. |
If CD3 was a great game at doing what it intended to do sure it would deserve a better score.
And also reviews should be as objective as possible and evaluate the product, not only "I like or had fun with it" but for the technical parts as well.
We are discussing how these bias and lack of standard affect the average not if someone should give relevance to one specific reviewer that do bad.

An 84 average is a good game, and one that I imagine I'll pick up still, although I'll admit after reading the MC main page and seeing something like this: "Death Stranding is an irredeemable piece of garbage that should serve as a warning to publishers who give developers carte blanche to create ‘art’." ... Makes me wonder just how other reviews say things like this: I was hooked from the first time I saw the title screen until the credits rolled 72 hours later. Death Stranding is immensely satisfying, and everything I could have hoped for and more from Kojima Productions. So, it's the most satisfying game ever, while also complete garbage in the eyes of someone else? To be honest, it's possible that both of those reviews (100/100 and 35/100) are complete bias, and the score was in the mind of the reviewer before even playing, but looking at the average, an 84 is a damn good game, just not game of the year material. Still what I'm going to be playing next weekend, and I'm sure it's going to be great, but it fucking sucks that it's not 90+. Imagine waking up this morning to seeing MC at 97/100 or something like that, and we'd be all pumped to play the greatest game released in years. |
Think about it as being cautious and helding expectations so you get pleased when you play.
