The sale of a 1 year Gold membership can be compared to the sale of one first party game. Nothing more or less. What I mean by this is that those Live sales are nothing different to Microsoft than the sales of Gears, Halo 3 or their other big sellers. They all have
to contribute towards reducing the losses.

 no.

1. Xbox Live has no game developer, publisher, retailer or something. Every single cent is for MS only.

2. You are paying 60Dollar a year, not once and never again like for a regular game. (excluding a sequel, this has to be developed again)

3. The payment for Arcade Games, Movies etc. can't be compared to a one-time-payment for a game

4. It is very likely that a gold-member will continue his membership after a year. Just because it is worth it.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
