Checkerboarding only renders half the pixels, and then basically guesses what the other half are meant to be based on the pixels they're next to.

So it's essentially rendering at 3840x1080 in a specific way, so the remaining pixels can be filled in afterwards and produce a 3840x2160 (4k) image. It's better than simply upscaling a full/normal 1620p image, even though the pixel count is equivalent.
