The Zelda series might be the only series that has made this work. BotW is considered weak plot wise because you can miss it almost entirely if you don't seek out the memories. The problem with Switching Link into a talkative character is that it could divide the Zelda fanzine especially if Nintendo doesn't nail it.
That said to me the best open world plot I have seen has been HZDs mainly because of Aloy, so generally I do prefer strong protagonists with a voice.
