Death2009 said: I don't think the 360 will get past 10 million this month, maybe next. Why would MS reduce production? I keep hearing about a hardware update, but have no real info on it. Anyway, I want a PS3. I just hope it succeeds, which I am sure it will.
MS reduced product production for the first quarter of the year, many presumed because in order to reach that "10 million shipped" marker (which makes the console look good) they had to produce them far faster than they sold them. The big rumor, however, is that they were trying to flush out existing inventory of 360's before announcing a "Zenith" version of the 360 with HDMI and a larger hard drive. That rumor was also based on a "big announcement" at this Game Developers Conference, which I believe has now ended, without any such announcement. This leads us to be quite sure that the reduced production was simply the overstock scenario mentioned earlier. Btw, I would never call the PS3 a lost cause, it mainly depends on what you would define as a "sucess". At this point, it is almost impossible for the PS3 to achieve the same market share success that it's predecessors enjoyed, the competition is far too flexible, affordable, and creative. Even 50% market share is going to require a lot of effort and luck for the PS3 at this point in time. Sony's best bet is in the long run, if they can hold out that long, they would have to want to try to stay with their current console longer than the competition, but the question is if they can take advantage of the competition's next "transition period". The PS3 isn't likely to be a failure, but it will not be the runaway sucess that Sony wants, even if Blu-Ray dominates HD-DVD, it still has to combat the mass market power of traditional DVD's.
