comparing entirely different countries that vary widely in terms of culture, demographics etc etc etc isn't a sensible thing to me

Different countries get compared all the time and of course that's sensible.

Also the culture between USA, Canada, Australia and many European countries ain't that different. They have a common history (besides native Americans, most Americans have roots to Europe, only a few generations ago) and the movies/books/games/shows/sports popular in the different Western countries are quite similar. The school system in these countries is quite similar. The curricular contents teached in these schools are quite similar. The age demographics in these countries are quite similar.

Both Western countries with a much higher population density and Western countries with a much lower population density than the USA have much lower incarceration rates than the USA (Western countries with a similar population density, too)... so what is the reason that the USA has to lock up that many people per capita? And why do they have to treat their prisoners worse than other Western countries although they always boast about the wealth of the USA compared to other countries?

Again: the degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.

climb down off your soapbox buddy, prison stats have absolutely nothing to do with my original argument

what is the purpose of prison?
