The 80gb is currently the only ps2 BC model available.  There are rumors that the 40gbs will recieve a firmware update with BC in October, but I find it highly unlikely given how much it would take to emulate the ps2's Graphics Synthesizer.  If it happened, it would probably have a low rate of BC for ps2 games.

Next gen, however, ps2 BC will probably be standard across all SKUs via software emulation, much like ps1 BC is standard across all SKUs this gen.

I don't know why people say this, there are a couple of PS2 emulators online and they are doing just fine with plenty of bootable games and playable game (from beginning to end and some with superior frame rates). And remember they are doing all this without any documentation or back end knowledge of the PS2. I would be dissapointed if BC software emulation didn't come.
