You've got yo be srriously naive or in a space of blissful ignorance if you don't see that politics had a large effect on this games score. If you think the daily dots 30 is based on the games merit, you need some perspectuve dude. And also, the protagonist, Deacon is not average. He has a deep bavk story and has a unique personality, the VAer does a brilliant job at bringing unique mannerisms to his character and his history opens up in a fluid way across the game. The game is more of a day (few months) in the life type deal so the fact that they were able to flesh him out so well in this period is a feat. |
This is an honest question: what type of stories do you like? What are some of your favourite movies? Maybe this story is right up your alley and you don't care that you've seen it many times before, or you just haven't and it was still fresh enough for you to enjoy.
In my opinion, Deacon's backstory and mannerisms was nothing that I have not seen done many, many, many times before; his character is a grunty, 'broken' dude who sticks by his honor. Yeah, he's solemn and a bid grungy, but also a bad-ass. Oh his wife is head, and he's more sad, and he's 'deep' because of his grieve.
This is a story that has been played out before - it's boring now. Especially the girlfriend/wife/family dying thing; I get it, it's traumatising. How many times is that going to be our character's motivation, though? It was dope when Kratos did it more than 10 years ago. But guess what? Santa Monica was smart enough to reboot the character and the new GoW gave us one of the best story experiences that has graced video games. They're smart enough to know when things become trite and overdone. Did the wife die? Yes. Was the story about the wife dying? No, it was about Kratos and his son. It was new, it was fresh, and it was really well-done.
Don't get me wrong, I like the game. It's solid. But if you know the story beats beat by beat already, it's gonna get boring.
Now, I am not naive about politics and am certainly not ignorantly bliss about politics. On the contrary, I explicitly am not naive enough to conflate things when they are not necessary to conflate, and to miss-analyse trends as a result. Some reviewers complained that Deacon was boring, and the response from angry whoever was to blindly say these reviewers hate white men. This could be the case for a few reviewers purposely adding fuel to the fire, or it could be a legitimate complain that the character is, indeed, boring. I'm not about to hop on a bandwagon and scape-goat.
