The key factor is it feel like Final Fantasy 7, to reassure fans that while we are updating the game, in graphics and how the controls work, the gameplay and story remains familiar. I really do wonder why SquEnix seem so a shamed of the ATB in it's original form, used on FF4-9, X-2 with variations in 12 and 13? The ATB was a natural and good evolution of standard turn based combat for FF, I don't think button mashing is.

The evolution of the Resident Evil gameplay from tank controls to over the shoulder seemed to be one that was beneficial for the series which is why their remakes are of that ilk but I'm not sure the First Person gameplay from RE7 will hold up in the long run, RE8 will probably go back to over the shoulder. Meanwhile, Street Fighter's attempts at 3D models and environment gaming didn't work as well with EX series, while being popular, never really established itself like the main series/style wanted but it paved the way for SF 4 and 5 2D fighter with 3D character models as graphics had caught up with gameplay ideals, what made SF, SF.

I want an FF game that looks like this or FF15 but played like FF6-9. My biggest fear with FF15, which I didn't buy because of it, was that SquEnix took a spin-off with KH gameplay, turned it into a FF full game and then when it did well (and it would because it has FF in the name) think that the controls it had are what people wanted. That this was the future of FF gameplay, when in reality there is nothing wrong with the ATB arena battles. The only issue SquEnix aren't making them anymore. They seem to be scared to, like the ATB is niche or something, but it's not, they forget that the ATB gameplay is what made the FF series, along with great stories and characters. In the end, the gameplay needs to be on point for people to remain invested in playing the game and the ATB was that factor, keeping it keeps it unique, else it's just another hack n slash adventure game like everything else is nowadays.

...little rant over. I hope FF 16 returns to actual ATB. Not everything needs to be open world action game. How boring will the industry be if everything is the same?

I suggest you watch this. The original FF VII is Max’s all-time favourite game. The video is quite lengthy but informative. And coming from someone who likes the original as much as he does, it should tell you a lot about how much Square is taking this remake seriously while keeping the fans of the original in mind.
