Publishers go after the big bucks.  The Call of Duties, The Battlefields, or whatever other trend is on top.  I think fans of Metroidvanias are very vocal, but don't compare to the sheer number of mainstream gamers who eat up the yearly iterations of the big blockbuster titles.

Fuck, I love metroidvanias though.

It's the biggest problem the industry had during the transition to HD with the PS360, they forgot the A and AA games and put all its efforts into AAA games. And Metroidvania games don't fit that class.

Thankfully the situation has changed a bit, for the better, and there's also the indie scene on PC (and later, consoles) that hasn't forget about these "niche" genres.
