I agree with you that we will probably never go back to the dark ages again but things might start to stagnate till a genius or national will makes the next breakthrough.  Only way I see us going back to the dark ages would be if we nuked ourselves to death.  Life and earth would go on without us and maybe in another billion years higher levels of life can start evolving.  I forgot how much longer the sun has left.  Think it still has 4 or 5 billion years left.

It's okay to stagnate because there'll come a time when we reach physical limits where we won't see technical improvements anymore. As long the world in the future remains productive as it does in our world today then civilization won't cease to exist but it just won't see an improvement ...
