Ofcourse it can that is why I linked digital foundry's video that should explain why it is one of the best looking games, it does things with the visuals that we haven't seen yet.

Path Tracing is not a new concept. Thus by extension Minecraft is not doing anything new or novel that we haven't seen in other games... And it typically relies on the depth buffer.

In-fact even before this console generation (Year 2011) started CryEngine was starting to push various Ray Tracing Techniques.

In fact... We can go farther back to Ray Casting too for our first steps into the realm of Ray Tracing.

In-fact Path Tracing was even a part of Frostbite years and years ago.

I think in general people just don't understand what Ray Tracing is... How we have come to this point, what it actually means.

If you buy the console/phone versions you will get limitations.  On PC it would take you 800 years to work from spawn to the edge of the world. (812 year to be exact) that's impossible on consoles because how more you load new chuncks in the game how bigger the save file gets and consoles have limitations how big the save file may be. If you would cover all of the MC world on pc one save file could be Petabytes.  Improving the vanilla version will literally make the game unplayable for tens of millions of people on pc that's why they keep the simple visuals and give you the options to improve it yourself.

Hence the need for a "next gen variant". - Minecraft was built for 7th gen platforms first and foremost.

There are still code snippets from Minecraft that stems to it's earliest development period.

Hell... Even Phones today are vastly superior to the phones of old, even some 8th gen consoles.
