Most people who get into a bad crowd are very weak minded, so once they can be rescued there is a good possibility to mold them into a valuable part of society again. And people who don't repent and pose a danger to others will just get offed. Problem solved.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
