The definition of intelligence is rather vague:
The ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.

Through genetics plants and trees can acquire and apply knowledge and skills. Genes store knowledge, genes acquire knew knowledge through trial and error in the form of mutations, and genes apply this knowledge and skill by 'building' an organism.
