If you ever want to move past the light gun shooters, Resident Evil has plenty of great starting places. I started with Revelations on the 3DS. So good. The multiplayer in that is also suprisingly good. Animal Crossing works great as a portable time waster. There's really not a lot of reason to go back and play old ones, as each new iteration mostly obsoletes the last. If the Switch title retains the abilities that New Leaf gave you as mayor, definitely start with it, but if we lose that ability, New Leaf might be worth checking out because being mayor is fun. The only other game maybe worth checking out in the series is the original, as it let you have more characters in your town and the towns felt a bit bigger to me. Also you could unlock fully playable NES games in the original.
