No it doesn't have to release for $399.

People are so much used to pay a lot more for new phones early, XBX released at $499 and it was fine, the PS4 spent its whole life until now with just a 25% price drop. PS3 $599 days are long, long gone.

$499 is the best pricing to go this gen.

Of course that's my opinion.

That all sounds great until the other guy releases cheaper and gets significant market share.  Taking a loss on a $400 console is fine because it will sell gangbusters if you can transfer all your PS4 games over and your account since there are many that would stay loyal if they aren’t paying $100 more for a graphics difference they might not care about
