I've owned my PS4 Pro (my 1st ever non-Nintendo console) for about 3 weeks and after finishing Spiderman (which I really enjoyed) I was ready for my next foray into these new exotic Sony waters.

Even though I spent my youth as a Nintendo devotee I was aware of Shadow of the Collusus' 'masterpiece' status, and always liked the look of it - the glowing reviews of the recent remaster seemed to cement this consensus.

So it seemed like a no-brainer!

Umm...

So far, it's pretty bad...

It seems to consist of riding through an empty, event-less, albeit pretty world, fighting a colossus... rinse and repeat... and that's it...

I'm not against simplicity, but if you're delivering such a stripped back experience then it better be tight, feel good and control well... It doesn't do any of those things...

Maybe it's because I've just come off of Spiderman which controls amazingly, feels really fluid and does it all in environments way more complex than SOTC.

I get that comparing a 2018 AAA Sony title to a remaster of a 2005 PS2 game may be unfair but the chasm really is 'colossal'...

If they spent serious dollar upgrading the visuals, couldn't they have kept a little bit aside to address the control problems?

I feel like half the time is spent holding R2, just staring at my stamina bar as it decreases, whilst getting repeatedly shaken back and forth by the big-bad. The camera at times is terrible, and the whole thing just feels like an exercise in frustration... Not to say that it's difficult mind you (so far anyway) - I've felled the first 3 colossi without losing a life...

I mean, I could list half a dozen N64 games that control way better than this, so I don't think the PS2 argument even holds water...

I honestly don't see how this remaster can have a metacritic score of 91 if the rest of the game is more of the same...? Is it only being reviewed by people who already adore the original...? If this was a new game being released today I'd say something along the lines of a 6 would be very generous! (all for the art-style - which is undeniably lovely)

As the title suggests, I'm only 3 colossi in, so maybe I'm being really premature and it gets way better & I should stick it out a bit longer?

If it's more of the same I'd like to know as I won't be wasting any more time!
