It was a good game for its time, and was justly rated when it came out. These days though the game is horribly outdated in just about every way I can think of. But then again, that's true for something like 90% of the games from the PS/N64/Saturn era.

The best games from the PS/N64/Saturn era are 3D Platformers, JRPGs, and games that stayed 2D like Castlevania. Super Mario 64, and Banjo-Kazooie may be slow to start, with heavy collectathon elements, but the later levels still hold up well. JRPGs naturally hold up well, because they don't have to navigate 3D spaces in the same way that live action games do. A lot of 2D games got mediocre reviews from that era because everyone thought a game had to be 3D, in the same way that everybody thinks games have to be 4K these days. But Megaman on the PS1 is just as fun as Megaman on SNES.
