BC has almost no impact on overall consumers, we (we all come regulary to discuss games in a videogame specialised website, I'd asume we are aren't average gamers at all) care, average consumers don't. They will pay atention to price first, this has been the case since ever.

B/C matters more at launch. Yes, if a console is too expensive, B/C is negated. But, if the PS5 is the same price or lower than the XB2, early adopters are going to be much more likely to pick the PS5 if they had a PS4, since they don't have to abandon their profiles and libraries. It'll also increase the number of people who can/will sell their PS4s and put the money towards a PS5.
