It's not that simple anymore with BC coming into play (if rumors are true). People wont be so quick to abandon Sony if they know they'll also have to leave all their games. It was easy this gen because neither offered BC so no matter what you were leaving your library of games behind.

BC has almost no impact on overall consumers, we (we all come regulary to discuss games in a videogame specialised website, I'd asume we are aren't average gamers at all) care, average consumers don't. They will pay atention to price first, this has been the case since ever.

Backwards compatibility gets early adopters to sell their old console. Then people who are too poor for a brand new system pick it up. Or it becomes a hand me down system. People play on the older hardware, grow up with it, and eventually buy the new hardware. This is why PS2 sold so well. Lots of people who didn't ever have a PS1 got to buy one, or were given one after the PS2 launched. They all loved PS1 so much that eventually they were able to save up and get a PS2 Slim.
