Not true! Performance isn't just fps. - You can have a high fps, but poor frame pacing which results in an experience that would be inferior to a more stable, but lower framerate.

Yeah. It's certainly the console that hasn't aged well.

But I think 900P + 20-25fps is still a good showing for it, but dropping it down to 720P+frame reconsctruction and boosting anti-aliasing a little would have been a good compromise.

No. You are increasing resolution at the expense of performance.
The higher in resolution you go, generally the larger your render times become.
