Instead of a flat out boycott, can't players just wait until the timed exclusivity runs out and then buy on Steam to make a point? Or is the Metro dev counting that as part of the boycott?

I'm in the camp that more competition to Steam is a good thing and if players don't want to support Epic that's fine. Exclusives are the norm with consoles and unlike consoles, you don't even have to spend more for a different PC game service (no hardware purchase or online subscription necessary).

As a console player, this looks like entitled whining, but that's not all uncommon for the "PC Master Race." Or maybe there's just something I'm not seeing.

EDIT: So I, was unaware of the 2 weeks to release notice preorder customers were given and the lack of basic functions the Epic Games Store has over Steam (no reviews, always online etc). I was also unaware of the plethora of Epic games Fortnite accounts that recently got hacked.

Having learned all of that, I understand the resentment. This isn't the first time Deep Silver pulled a dick move, didn't the last Metro game lock an entire difficulty mode behind Gamestop preorders?

One thing of note, it's likely the publisher, Deep Silver's decision and not the devs, so if you still wanted the game, maybe a console purchase? I'm not into the series much, but I'm not really sure what I would do in this circumstance.
