The original Metroid is really special, and still has elements that I wish other Metroid's had. I like the way the game sets you back to the beginning of whatever area that you start in. They aren't actually so big that you can't overcome them, and the drastic set back makes it a good reinforcement tool when it comes to memorizing the layout of the map. I do think that the health setback really ruins this though, but the base idea is so good that I wish it was kept in other Metroids if I'm being honest.

The farming I'm more okay with. It's easiest in M1 to imagine that what Samus is doing here is literally hunting prey for energy BotW-style, and I think that really adds to the sense that Samus is exploring a wild and dangerous place. Doesn't really make much sense considering that what she's actually exploring, according to the games manual, is a pirate fortress, but again, I think it's a more tedious but more immersive mechanic of the game.

It also feels like it's the most open in the series right out the gate. It really just needed a map. Great game.
