So, Arlo recently said that his game of the year was an indie game on Switch called Yoku's Island Express. I think it looks very interesting and I have played a bit of the demo. Can anyone here attest to it's quality/lack of quality, is it worth a purchase or not?

Sounds like Arlo wants to be edgy and special.

What you play in the demo is representative of the full game, although it can get tiresome to walk back and forth between spots where you think it could be possible to proceed. There's no set order of places you have to travel to and the speed-travel option is half-baked. The novelty of the pinball gameplay also doesn't last forever, so it becomes routine. It doesn't have time to get really annoying though, because the game isn't long. IIRC it's about six hours to plain beat it or 8-10 hours if you decide to go for all collectibles.

It's entertaining, but doesn't justify its price tag, so I'd rate it a 6/10 on my review scale. That's the score that is given to games that leave positive impressions, but have notable flaws. In the case of Yoku's Island Express, it's the short length and eventual staleness of the gameplay. If you liked the demo, get the game when it's 40% off or more. I got it myself during such a sale in September and I would have been pissed if I had paid more.

Well, Arlo did say he didn't play as much as he wanted to this year,  so maybe that's it.

It was actually on sale today for 50% off but it was 2AM and I didn't want to make a rushed decision - when I woke up it was off sale :/

Sounds like something worth checking out at a later time if it's not continuously interesting throughout. I'll probably get it on sale. I really like the artstyle, reminds me of Rayman Origins and Legends.

I mean, Arlo is the guy who couldn't tell the difference between a Smash Ball and its fake variant, so I wasn't surprised to see Smash wasn't his #1 pick. I haven't played Yoku's Island, but I did see some friends playing it and it looked pretty cool, yeah. Not expecting GotY material but it doesn't need to be - not that I'm planning on buying it anyway.

He said he didn't have enough time to get everything out of Smash yet, or something like that I think.

I don't expect it to be GOTY either, just prefacing the context beforehand.

I guess I'll wait on sale then! Thanks for the responses.
