Okay. Here's what we got: Nintendo has a ton of revenue coming in from their games, consoles, merchandise, etc. If one of their evergreen franchises fails to make a huge impact, they can afford to wait. Sooner or later it will sell or become a limited edition collector's thingy. On the flip side, you have companies that rely on huge initial sales to make ends meet. You have companies that think they can make up their initial losses with DLC or whatever as long as a copy of the game makes it into your home. And you have companies that may say "Okay, we're going to lose money but at least we can minimize our losses".
