PS3 had a much worse reveal, price and time to cut down costs... still outsold the competitor that had more time on the market, more games available upfront, lower price and all.

So, what's you point?
I wasn't comparing the Xbox One reveal to the PS3's. Although in my view, the $499/Always Online/Requires Kinect 2.0/DRM policies/Used Games BS/Overemphasis on TV and other media outlets BESIDES gaming/Lack of video games were far, FAR worse that $599/Lack of video games, which were the only things the PS3 had going against it. The Xbox One's reveal was arguably the biggest shot the foot in gaming history, second only in my view to the SEGA Saturn.

PlayStation was, and is even more, a much bigger brand name than Xbox and they were fresh off back to back winning generations and two of the best selling and most beloved systems of all time, both over 100 million, one over 150 million and the greatest selling system ever. They had an established following and legacy. The two problems I mentioned it had were problems they could easily address over time and are pretty much part of the course with a new console launch. Once they gradually lowered the price to more affordable levels, they had already built and were building a quality and impressive library of games that eventually helped it overtake the 360.

The Xbox One's fate was sealed the moment it was revealed. You can pinpoint the exact moment Sony won the generation and gained the massive success and momentum they have now with the PS4 right at that reveal. Because all Sony had to do was not fuck up and they had this gen on lockdown. It was so bad, that before Microsoft finally ditched the Kinect and slashed $150 off the retail price, it was selling just barely above pre-Mario Kart 8 Wii U levels. There were even debates over which system would sell more, the Wii U or Xbox One? If your system was selling closely and being compared weekly and regularly in sales to the Wii U: You. Fucked. Up.
To go from that, to where they are now is a fantastic turn around for Microsoft.

I forgot about the TV emphasis. Yikes. What a shit show. Don’t forget the focus on apps too. It was very entertainment focused in general with games kind of just thrown in as a secondary.

Plus no one at MS seemed to know the features and policies themselves, it seemed like once a week there were contradicting statements in interviews or tweets given by execs causing even more customer confusion. Sony meanwhile was coming off the juggernaut PS2 and just needed to fix their price. Not even close.
