Sci-fi doesn't necessarily mean space marines vs aliens.
It could just be futuristic earth based war ala Battlefield 2142.
Futuristic games are usually kind of hit-or-miss with me. If they do it right it's awesome, if not it comes across as incredibly generic and boring. Infinity Ward is a great developer and if this rumor is true I think it would probably end up in the former category.
