There's a battery in every controller, and the thing with batteries is, they don't last forever; they get worse over time until they stop working altogether. The concept of a battery may be old, but at least it means that any device that uses it can still function as long as they make them. Replacing the built-in batteries in a lot of 'modern' electronics is a lot harder.
