Personally I would support Bernie. I think he's just smarter than other politicians, and/or actually uses reason. He's been on the right side of a lot of issues (deregulation that led to recession, war in Iraq), that a lot of others either just didn't see clearly, or went against sense for political purposes.
As for who they should run (if winning is the only criteria)... I dunno. It's possible that someone like Bernie could take some of the "anti-establishment" sentiment away from Trump. But at the same time, he might alienate some of the more mainstream moderates.
I kind of think that all the democrats really need is someone scandal free that can pass as a moderate. I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for the baggage (emails/Benghazi whether those were valid criticisms or not), Hillary would have easily won. She's ultimately a fairly moderate democrat. So, I think if they could find another fairly moderate democrat without that baggage, I think it should be an easy win. Biden may fit the bill, but I don't know if the ties to Obama will be a help or a hindrance. Obama is obviously still among the most popular democrats, and still hated by the right, but I don't really know how moderates view him, and if that view is more favorable now than it was two years ago.
I think after what has been and seemingly will continue to be a chaotic presidency, I think someone low key and stable may be very attractive. It's like after having that fling with the bad boy on the motorcycle (the most flattering comparison I'll ever make for Trump) you may just want to go with the nice guy who's gonna pay the mortgage on time and pick you up from the airport.
