The biggest issue that I see is that people who aren't used to dealing with mixed people aren't sure how they are supposed to act. There is confusion on what to say and how to phrase things. When people are uncertain, they tend to keep their distance.
Trying to generalize the United States on something like this is useless, though. Even within my state, you'll find the way people think differs by region. Experiences can vary greatly.
One thing I do know is that there are pockets of people who think it is "wrong" to marry those of a different race, a lot of which comes from religion. However, many of them don't treat mixed people worse because of that belief.
