That's how the gaming culture has been for a while. The score means a lot to fans. The high scores hype the games, just like great comments and scores hype up movies and TV shows. It's like showing a trailer that shows Nintendo or Rockstar or Naughty Dog, you catch people's attention.
Ultimately, we all need to take things into context, or else we make assumptions that high scores means "that's the game I want." If the reviews themselves do not show anything compelling to you despite the high score, reconsider your decision to purchase the game.
