How old is your card? Could it be that the heatsink has too much dust and can't properly cool the card?

Nearly four years, it's a GTX 970.

It's entirely possible, likely even I'd say, but I'm somewhat afraid of opening it and end up making it worse or even breaking the card somehow, thermal paste has always been the worst part of building PCs to me :/
