Well, AMD better takes advantage of the situation, because it's not a matter of if Intel will come back, but when.

And I doubt there will be a CPU with more than 8 cores/16 threads.

The next iteration of Ryzen and it's Ryzen+ follow up should sell strong at 8c16t if those IPC rumors are close and if the clocks are decent enough. After that they could jump to 12c24t or 16c32t if they feel the need to. It'll also depend on what Intel decides to do once their 10nm process is finally in full swing.

Before 10nm, Intel needs to fix their 14nm one that's causing problems and shortages, something that also benefits AMD. And once Intel has 10nm, we'll see how it compares to the competing 7nm process.

As for where Ryzen will go, I've read (I don't know if they're rumors or the actual plans AMD has) that they'll go from a 4-core based CCX to a 6-core one. If that's true, that would mean that Ryzen3 range could go from 6 to 12 cores.
