How many % of eligible voters usually vote in the US?

Sadly, far too few.  We get about 60% voter turnout during presidential elections and 40% voter turnout during the midterms (like this one).

Other countries look at us rather confused because we push 'democracy' all over the world and then don't even exercise it ourselves.

That's legitimate scary. Is there a reason to why it's so low?

We had a rate of 87% I believe in our latest election

Being fined for not voting is a bit much.  What we should do is register all citizens by default and vote on the weekend (rather than Tuesday).

You do realize many people work on weekends right? But one may argue that some people go and vote to get out of work.

Imagine if it was a national holiday. I can see a lot of people doing fun things on that day instead of voting. It's their day off, they may not want to sit in a line to vote. Or take off Monday as well and make a four day weekend or something.

There's no chance to vote prior to election day? In Sweden you can vote several weeks ahead of election day. Under controlled circumstances ofc.
