Politics - I am very sad. - View Post

I didn't say he has to own a gun.  I told him that if he wants to be free of tyranny, he better have something to dissuade the state from doing whatever the he'll it wants without fear if meaningful resistance.  And, in context, the comment was about the OP calling someone a fascist, then saying one of their big issues trying to arm the populace.  Those are, practically speaking, opposites.

For the record, I'm a pacifist (though I don't like the connotations of that word), and I do prefer living in the USA to those worse places you mentioned.

Also, for the record, the politician in question probably is a fascist, or at least very close to it.  I'm not defending that scumbag.  I'm trying to stop the OP from advocating for his neighbors to bend over and take whatever the fascist gives em.

Fair enough. I take this politician's desire to arm the populace as being directed at arming specifically only his supporters, or encouraging them to arm in support of him. Brazil is already nearly as violent as Mussolini's Italy, I can only imagine what will happen when someone with similar political instincts if not the same basic political philosophy gets into power. Honestly if things get much worse, even I'm going to give up on government. We'd probably have a much easier time uniting around common causes if there weren't political party loyalties clouding everyone's judgement. I'd say I'd miss the constitutional rights, but those aren't evenly enforced anyway. I'm not quite ready to give up on it yet, but I'm beginning to understand the appeal of your position.
