My vote goes for 8. If not 8, then I'd probably vote 12. When it comes to 8, a large part of it is nostalgia, as I had gotten my PlayStation for Xmas, asked for FF7, but my Dad had gotten me FF8 instead. I remember having to leave the game running for the first day because I didn't have a memory card. Love the characters, love Balamb Gardens, Norg, flying cities, love the University-type feeling it had, and hot damn the music was so great. So much I loved with FF8.
As for 12, it really came down to the combat. At the time, it was refreshing to play a game that wasn't turn-based, while nowadays I want a return to form.
